Ships Of The Night
The coast of Borneo…where men's passions run as high as the temperature. Following an altercation during a card game gone wrong, Donald Hearne falsely believes he killed a man. Rather than try to explain himself and risk the wrath of the Borneo justice system, he escapes to nearby Derelict Island, only telling his sister, Johanna. After finding proof of her brother's innocence, Johanna vows to bring Donald home and enlists the aid of rugged ship's captain Dan Meloy. The pair will face pirates on the high seas - and Johanna will almost become the harem girl of a Chinese warlord - before they reach Derelict Island and their true goal…but will it be too late?
Ships of the Night is a rollicking South Seas adventure from short-lived studio Trem Carr Pictures (studio president Trem Carr eventually found more success as one of the founders of Monogram Pictures in 1931.) Formerly a WAMPAS Baby Star in 1922, leading lady Jacqueline Logan is probably best known for playing Mary Magdalene in Cecil B. DeMille's classic The King of Kings (1927). Legendary Japanese actor Sôjin Kamiyama (usually billed as just Sojin, as he is here) had an incredible career, appearing in classic American silent films like the The Thief of Bagdad (1924) and The Sea Beast (1926) before returning to his native Japan in the 1930s, eventually ending his amazing life in the cinema with an unforgettable role in Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai (1954). Longtime bit player Jack Mower, who made almost 600 films between 1914 and 1960 (and usually went uncredited) is surprisingly top-billed here. Many true film historians believe Mower to have also been silent cowboy star Jack Meehan, who made five feature-length Westerns for Ermine Productions before mysteriously disappearing (see for example The Rattler, 1925.) Beloved funnyman Andy Clyde, who at the time was making short subjects for Mack Sennett, provides comic relief. (1928)
