Looking Glass
"If nobody in this world is there for you, if you're all on your own, sing. Sing loud and clear. Sing with all your heart, and your voice will be heard."
Wise, simple, heartbreaking advice shared by a grandmother with her granddaughter during one unforgettable summer in The Looking Glass, the latest triumph from Academy Award-nominated director John Hancock (Bang the Drum Slowly, Prancer).
In the film, 13-year-old Julie (newcomer Grace Tarnow), devastated by the loss of her mother, reluctantly arrives in Indiana to stay with her grandmother, Karen (Dorothy Tristan, who also wrote the screenplay), a former star of stage and screen. Life in rural Indiana is not exactly what Julie had in mind, nor is Karen thrilled by spending her days with a sullen teen who buries her face in an iPad.
After overhearing Julie singing one day, Karen persuades her to audition for a local play. Julie scores the coveted lead role, giving Karen - who is suffering from the early stages of Alzheimer's - one final chance to impart her legacy on her last surviving loved one.
