Former KGB agent Viktor Kärppä isnt a killer even though he looks like one, and he saw things on the job that hed like to forget. In an attempt to escape his past and create some order in his life he settles in Finland, putting down roots in the country of his ancestors. Assimilating into his adopted culture proves impossible, however, because he comes off as an outsider to Finns. His multi-cultural background and fluency in Russian and Finnish, which were useful to him once, are now liabilities. As he puts it, Im a Finn in Russia, a Russian in Finland. Kärppä tries to make a living two ways: as a private investigator and as a business facilitator for Russian immigrants, but that doesnt sit well with his girlfriend, Marja. Try as he might to avoid it, he keeps brushing up against the criminal elements he wanted so badly to leave behind: Russian mafia kingpins, drug dealers, former KGB operatives and lowlifes from the Ingrian people group - ethnic Finns who have immigrated from their native Russia back to Finland. It all takes its toll on his relationship with Marja, who sees any association with the criminal world as a bad sign for their future together. Can a man change his identity or shed his loyalties merely by crossing a border?
