Green Berets / Flying Leathernecks / In Harms Way - John Wayne Triple Feature
Green Berets:
They were crack troops skilled in the techniques of unconditional warfare, the soldiers of the Special -and the focus of Hollywood's first feature film about the Vietnam War: The Green Berets. John Wayne stars in and co-directs this depiction of America's Vietnam effort, based on Robin Moore's novel. Wayne wrote to President Lyndon Johnson to request military assistance for the film - and got more than enough firepower to create an impressive spectacle. Its soldiers fit and tried-and-true mold of earlier Wayne war classics like Back To Bataan and Sands Of Iwo Jima. Their heroics are timeless.
Flying Leathernecks:
Marine fighter squadron VMF 247 is in the thick of it on Guadalcanal. The besieged airstrip they hold is hammered almost nightly by offshore batteries. Malaria and combat fatigue grip many of the men. Fuel is low. Replacement parts for the squad's Wildcat planes are few. And the only things not in short supply are the enemy...and Major Don Kirby's determination to keep fighting with whatever he has. American icon John Wayne is in the cockpit and in command as Kirby, a courageous leader at odds with his executive officer (Robert Ryan) and the forefront of tacticians eager to coordinate ground combat with low-flying aerial sorties. Nicholas Ray (Rebel Without A Cause) directs, skillfully incorporating actual battlefield and dogfight footage. Flying Leathernecks has the flight stuff!
In Harms Way:
Producer-director Otto Preminger's epic treatment of the bombing of Pearl Harbor details the devastating sneak attack on the Naval base as well as the explosive behind the scenes stories. An awesome cast of stars including John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, Patricia Neal, Henry Fonda, Carroll O'Connor, Burgess Meredith, Paula Prentiss and a host of other notables are interwoven into this account of the attack itself, the disobeyed orders, the American counter-offensive, father-son reunions, battles at sea and layers of romantic entanglements. It's a story that's been told and re-told, but perhaps never so completely.
