East Palace, West Palace

A-Lan (Si Han) is a young (married) gay writer who is a regular in the public restrooms and city parks that are nocturnal gay cruising areas. He attracts the attention of Officer Shi (Hu Jun), a policeman whom he boldly taunts and sexually teases until he is arrested. Shi takes A-Lan to a desolate police station where a most unusual all-night interrogation begins. For as the policeman plays sadomasochistic power games with his victim, A-Lan turns the encounter into a fanciful Jean Genet-like recounting of his life. A somber analogy of life that is beautifully filmed and which captures the desolate beauty and harsh realities of being different in repressive China.
